The Thomas Bennett house
Charleston, SC
The Thomas Bennett House is located in the center of downtown Charleston. Built in 1825, the historic mansion sits on nearly three‑quarters of an acre, with expansive gardens, a brick courtyard, and a separate carriage house that create multiple ceremony and reception options. The property feels tucked away and quiet, yet it’s just steps from Charleston’s historic district, making it especially convenient for guests staying in nearby hotels while still offering a spacious garden setting for a wedding day.
The Thomas Bennett House | CHARLESTON SC
Having photographed many weddings at the Thomas Bennett House, I’ve always appreciated how naturally the property blends Charleston history with an intimate garden setting. Tucked into downtown Charleston, the historic mansion and surrounding grounds offer a quieter atmosphere than many larger venues while still delivering the classic Lowcountry backdrop couples are looking for. The garden lawn is often used for ceremonies, framed by mature trees and the elegant façade of the house, which creates a timeless setting for both the ceremony and portraits afterward. Inside the Thomas Bennett House, the historic rooms and piazzas provide beautiful natural light for getting‑ready moments and smaller portraits throughout the day. Because the property is compact and thoughtfully designed, it’s easy to move between locations while still capturing a variety of images that reflect the character of Charleston. For couples planning a downtown Charleston wedding, the Thomas Bennett House offers a refined and relaxed setting that photographs beautifully from start to finish.

Photography Tips for Weddings at the Thomas Bennett House
Ceremony & Lighting
• Late afternoon ceremonies tend to photograph best in the garden because the light softens as it moves across the property and filters through the trees.
• The surrounding greenery helps diffuse sunlight, which keeps ceremony images evenly lit even during brighter parts of the day.
Planning Tips
• The property is relatively compact, which makes it easy to move between portrait locations without needing a large amount of time in the schedule.
• Sunset portraits can often be done quickly in the garden or along the brick walkways where the evening light falls nicely through the trees.
