charleston venues
This perfect Kiawah wedding venue is just 40 minutes from Charleston with beautiful waterfront views along the Kiawah River. The famous River Course club house includes locker rooms for getting ready, riverfront lawn, sunset views, and one of the best ballrooms in the low country with easy access to to a massive covered porch and the riverfront lawn. The River Course at Kiawah is easily one of Charleston’s most desirable Lowcountry venues.
The River Course at Kiawah | CHARLESTON SC
The River Course at Kiawah Island Club offers one of the most scenic wedding settings along the South Carolina coast. Located on the quieter side of Kiawah Island, the venue overlooks expansive marshlands and winding waterways that create incredible depth and light for photography throughout the day. I’ve found the ceremony lawn with it's massive Oak trees and Azaleas provide a natural backdrop that feels both refined and relaxed, with coastal breezes and open skies adding to the atmosphere. As the sun begins to set over the marsh, the light softens into warm golden tones that make for some of the most memorable portraits of the day. Between the peaceful setting, the beautifully designed clubhouse, and the dramatic sunset views, the River Course consistently provides an elegant and distinctly Lowcountry environment for weddings on Kiawah Island
Location 01
Front Lawn
The front lawn of the club house is a gorgeous ceremony location for a Charleston wedding with blooming Azaleas, and Spanish moss draped Oaks shading your guests from the heat. Typically much less wind here but you do have to make sure that there is no one coming or going from the clubhouse since the driveway circles the lawn.
Location 02
The Main Lawn
The River Course back lawn faces west and frequently has a beautiful sunset view. It is level enough for a large ceremony and overlooks Kiawah river and the clubs 18th hole. Almost always a breeze and the lawn is easily accessible from the ballroom and is an incredible spot for sunset photos for the guests.
Location 03
Oak Trees and Sandtrap
The giant live oak trees adjacent to the River Course lawn create a beautiful partially shaded photo and ceremony location with views of Kiawah river in the background.
Location 04
The Club
The Clubhouse offers multiple spaces for cocktail hour, wedding prep and bridal party storage, and incredible Men's locker room shaped like the inside of a whiskey barrel with a full menu, an enormous covered porch, large balconies, a large living room, a large bar room, and a wonderful ballroom. These interior spaces offer lots of options for managing guests, staging cocktail hour, hidden reception set-up, and everything else you might need.
Location 05
18th Hole
Beyond the back lawn lies the 18th hole which is a perfect spot for sunset portraits and a quiet moment away from the guests before dinner. You can photograph this area from multiple angles which makes a photographers job very quick. Just a few feet away from the ballroom.
Location 06
The Ballroom
No venue offers such ease of use as the River Course at Kiawah and the ballroom is one of the main reasons. It offers 4500 square feet of waterproof reception space! It's separate from the ceremony locations which makes set up very easy. It's wind proof, rain proof, right next to the back lawn where guests like to step out for a moment for sunset photos, and it includes, power, bathrooms, kitchen, and staff!

Photography Tips for Weddings at the River Course
• Riverfront Ceremony Lawn – The ceremony lawn overlooking the Kiawah River provides wide, open views that work beautifully for portraits immediately after the ceremony. The natural horizon and marsh grasses create a classic Lowcountry backdrop.
• Marsh Overlook at Sunset – As the sun drops over the marsh, the light becomes soft and warm. This is typically the best time for couple portraits, with golden light reflecting off the water and tall grasses.
• Clubhouse Grounds – The architecture around the clubhouse offers clean lines and shaded areas that work well for more classic portraits, especially earlier in the day when the sun is higher.
Ceremony & Lighting
• Late afternoon ceremonies tend to photograph best here because the open marsh landscape allows the light to soften naturally as the sun lowers.
• The riverfront setting reflects a lot of natural light, which helps create bright, even ceremony photos even when the sky is slightly overcast.
Planning Tips
• Build 10–15 minutes of sunset portrait time into the timeline. The marsh views at the River Course consistently produce some of the best golden hour light on Kiawah Island.
• The property is fairly expansive, so allowing a little extra time to move between locations helps take advantage of the different landscapes around the venue.
• Wind can occasionally pick up along the river, which can actually add movement and energy to portraits but is helpful to keep in mind for veils and ceremony setups.
